Miscellaneous
We welcome your suggestions for both the center and this web site.
Technology
This page addresses the technology used in constructing these web pages and in the center.
Hardware
The computers were constructed from parts using instructions here. We believe construction from parts results in better quality computer systems as the cooling (case technology), motherboard quality and features, video card quality and features, disk size, and memory error correction can each be specified.
We also run, within the Center, Gigabit ethernet and have a 100Mbit connection to the university.
Software
We are primarily running Ubuntu Dapper. Ubuntu is a high quality distribution with new releases every six months and is based on Debian. It is open source. We also run:- qmail
- djbdns
- apache2
- rsnapshot (backup software)
We plan to start running kernelSec software for production purposes in the next year.
Computer classifications
The computers are used in the Center for a variety of purposes. We have servers, workstations, and experimental machines. We are planning to make available VMs for course work and experimental purposes.
Web page technology
The web pages constructed here used the open source templates available at http://oswd.org/. We used htmlpp, a preprocessor of html pages written in PERL, to manage the content.
